The Policy Circle was honored to #Circleup with Heather Fischer, who joined us live from the White House to discuss her role as Special Advisor to the President where she works to combat all forms of human trafficking, including labor trafficking, sex trafficking and online child exploitation.

Dr. Karen Bartuch, Former Chicago Police Officer, and Sgt. Sofia Rosales-Scantena, a 26-year Veteran of the Fort Wayne Indiana Police Department as well as Toni McIlwain, dove into The New Policy Circle Brief on Policing and Police Reform, which offers an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the role of police and how we as citizens can help bridge the gaps between our communities and police officers.

America Lost: Tackling Poverty in Our Communities with Chris Rufo, Discovery Institute’s Center on Wealth & Poverty & filmmaker. Rufo’s film, America Lost, dives deeper into the human crisis of poverty, joined The Policy Circle for an engaging and enlightening virtual discussion on Poverty in America. The film was a perfect primer for this virtual discussion and allowed Policy Circle members to discuss how to impact their own communities using The Policy Circle Brief.

EqualiTea: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment Ratification with Susana Martinez, Former Governor of New Mexico, Leah Nahmias, Director of Indiana Humanities, and Amanda Becker, Washington Correspondent, the 19th News. The Policy Circle celebrated the fight to win the vote for women with insightful conversations about the history of the women’s suffrage movement, the role of women in the media and the journey for women elected officials. 

The State of American Agriculture and the Food Supply Chain with Iowa Senator Joni Ernst. The coronavirus, says Senator Ernst, has sparked “a new awakening” of interest in food security and sourcing. Americans want to know: Who is handling our food? Where is our food coming from? What are the safety measures in place? Senator Ernst walked attendees through the answers to these questions, the policies that impact our agriculture system the most, and reminded each of us that being involved and making a difference is possible. 

Economic Dominance, U.S. China Relations and Playing the Long [Policy] Game with Heather NauertHudson Institute fellow and former Acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs at the State Department. Nauert joined The Policy Circle to gather the pieces of the puzzle to understand how we got to where we are today, and where we are going in our relationship with China. First, recognizing what we do and do not know about China’s long-term strategies to achieve global economic dominance.

Federalism, the Coronavirus and Civic Duty with Texas Congressman Chip Roy and Ellen Troxclair. We were joined by Texas Congressman Chip Roy, who gave some insight on his thought processes when bills make their way to his desk in the midst of unknowns and urgency. Congressman Roy takes a few things into consideration, including hearing directly from constituents, which he said is one of the most important parts of the process for the Congressman and his fellow representatives and leaders across the country.

Democracy in Action: Election Series

When it comes to Understanding Your Ballot, there’s a lot more to consider than just President and Vice President. The Policy Circle was joined by Allison Prange from Ballotpedia, who walked Circle Leaders through the ins-and-outs of being Vote/Ballot Ready. 

 

Powering the Polls: Serving as a poll worker or election official can help ensure that election rules are followed, thus ensuring the integrity of the results. Policy Circle Leaders and local election experts discussed how to get involved in the election cycle on a local level. 

 

SheVotes: Freedom is about finding your voice, having an opinion and staying engaged and connected to your neighbors and fellow citizens. The Policy Circle joined SheFactor for a lively virtual discussion on taking action in your community by voting and being civically engaged.
